Staying motivated to exercise regularly can be tough – but one of the most effective ways to stay on track and reach your fitness goals is by working out with others. Group fitness not only creates a supportive and energetic environment, but it also brings a host of physical and mental health benefits that can transform your wellness journey.
Is a fitness camp for you?
If you are anything like me, the answer is yes. I learned early on that I thrive with group support. At just seven years old, I cheered for the Westside Cubs. I loved being around like-minded people who shared the same goals. As the smallest on the team, I was always at the top of the pyramid - literally. That meant I had to trust my teammates completely. They were my foundation, and I could not make it to the top without them.
Later, I ran track and cross country from 8th grade through high school. While I had some individual wins, it was the team that brought home championships. Every time I passed the baton, I knew I had to give my all – not just for me, but for my teammates. Preparation, encouragement, and unity were everything. I’m forever grateful to my mentors Mrs. Rodgers and Coach Moore, who believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. They pushed me to grow – not just as an athlete, but as a young woman finding her way.
In college, I went dormant; I did not participate in any sports unless you consider stepping for the dynamic ladies of Delta Sigma Theta! That’s when the “freshman 15” crept in. I wasn’t overweight. If anything, I could stand the extra pounds on my little chicken legs, but I didn’t feel like my best self. I missed the energy, the discipline and the joy that came with training.

In 2008, I started back on my health and fitness journey. I know that I am at my best when I have a team – my fitness family – cheering me on, holding me accountable and pushing me to grow. I’m grateful to my TFC family for keeping me young, strong and on my toes.
