November 15, 2024 “Have you Checked out for the YEAR?”
It’s the 4th Quarter and time to rally, to kick things into high gear. In the last quarter of any game, you go harder to score and make crucial decisions in order to secure a victory in the end. A good team will execute a game winning drive and push through with no excuses and finish strong.
However, when it comes to our health and fitness, we check out during this time of the year with a myriad of excuses.
· It’s getting cold outside
· It’s getting darker earlier
· Cuffing season
· Holiday gatherings/parties
· Holiday distractions
· Hibernation season
Although cold days and long nights make it hard to get out of bed, let alone get the body moving. Studies have shown that activity levels start to decrease as the temperature goes down. Light is also a factor. If it’s dark early in the morning or at night when one comes home from work, that can be a physical barrier to exercise and a de-motivator.
Statistics show, approximately 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail February and 75% of gym memberships go unused after the initial enthusiasm wears off.
The goal is to remove as many obstacles as possible and make small changes that can make staying active easier until spring returns. At this time of year, exercise can also help to cope with seasonal depression.
Here are tips to motivate you to stay active in the winter:
- Seek out an exercise partner or group. Your TFC fit Family provides support, camaraderie, and distraction from bad and cold weather.
- Make it a goal just to get to the gym. Focus on getting to the studio. Once you are at TFC, the problem is solved, you know our trainers will bring the fun and the exciting workouts that keep you coming back for more.
- Focus on the mental health benefits. Don’t worry about weight loss or feeling fit right away, during these winter months. The mental health benefits happen almost immediately. You will feel better, less stressed, and more relaxed, which may be especially important during the hectic holiday season and at a time when many suffer from seasonal affective disorder.
- Plan ahead and anticipate. For outdoor workouts watch the weather forecast. Plan the appropriate clothing and have everything ready, gear, gym bag and snack. If you know what you are up against, it won’t bother you as much.
I want to offer two last thoughts, first participate in the Holiday Boot Camp. It’s festive, fun minus all the things many of you dislike about a regular bootcamp, no run days, no meal plan and loads of fun activities to celebrate the season. Second, Finish What You Start! End this year on a strong note. Rally for this 4th Quarter and be victorious on your fitness journey. No Mess!
